Where the rate comes from

When the page loads, your browser requests the euro foreign exchange reference rates of the European Central Bank (ECB) from api.frankfurter.dev, a free service that republishes them. The request is the same for every visitor: it does not contain your amount or the currencies you picked. Under the result you see the date the rates apply to and the time your browser fetched them.

The ECB sets its reference rates once per working day, at around 16:00 Central European Time, and publishes them for information only. They are not live market rates, and they are not the rate you get when you exchange money: banks, card companies and exchange offices add their own margin or fee. The ECB quotes every currency against the euro, so a rate between two other currencies is calculated through the euro.

No rate is built into this page. If the request fails, the converter shows no result instead of an old or made-up number.

USD per JPY = (USD per EUR) ÷ (JPY per EUR)     dollars = yen × (USD per JPY)

How to convert yen to dollars: a worked example

With round example rates of 1 EUR = 1.10 USD and 1 EUR = 165 JPY (not the current rates):

  1. USD per JPY = 1.10 ÷ 165 = 0.006667. Put the other way, one dollar is 150 yen.
  2. 10,000 JPY × 0.006667 = 66.67 USD.
  3. In the other direction, 100 USD × 150 = 15,000 JPY.

Yen to Dollar Converter: FAQ

How do I convert yen to dollars by hand?
Divide the yen amount by the number of yen per dollar. If one dollar is 150 yen, 10,000 yen are 10,000 ÷ 150 = 66.67 dollars.
Why does the yen have no decimals?
The yen is not divided into smaller units in everyday use, so prices are whole numbers. One yen is worth much less than one dollar, which is why yen amounts look large. The converter still shows two decimals for precision.
Is this the live USD/JPY market rate?
No. It is derived from the European Central Bank's reference rates, which are set once per working day at around 16:00 Central European Time. The date of the rate used is shown under the result.
Will I get this rate in Japan?
Usually not exactly. Card networks, banks, ATMs and exchange counters apply their own rate with a margin, and sometimes a fee.
Why is no rate shown?
