Where the rate comes from

When the page loads, your browser requests the euro foreign exchange reference rates of the European Central Bank (ECB) from api.frankfurter.dev, a free service that republishes them. The request is the same for every visitor: it does not contain your amount or the currencies you picked. Under the result you see the date the rates apply to and the time your browser fetched them.

The ECB sets its reference rates once per working day, at around 16:00 Central European Time, and publishes them for information only. They are not live market rates, and they are not the rate you get when you exchange money: banks, card companies and exchange offices add their own margin or fee. The ECB quotes every currency against the euro, so a rate between two other currencies is calculated through the euro.

No rate is built into this page. If the request fails, the converter shows no result instead of an old or made-up number.

How to convert pounds to dollars: a worked example

With round example rates of 1 EUR = 1.10 USD and 1 EUR = 0.85 GBP (not the current rates):

  1. USD per GBP = 1.10 ÷ 0.85 = 1.2941.
  2. 80 GBP × 1.2941 = 103.53 USD.
  3. In the other direction, 100 USD ÷ 1.2941 = 77.27 GBP.
Pounds to dollars example at round example rates of 1 EUR = 1.10 USD and 1 EUR = 0.85 GBP: 1 GBP = 1.2941 USD, so 80.00 GBP is 103.53 USD, and 100.00 USD back is 77.27 GBP.
Example rates only. The converter fetches the ECB's latest rates when the page loads.

The table under the converter shows common amounts at the rate that was actually loaded.

The currency converter handles any pair of the 30 currencies with an ECB rate. Two other common pairs have their own pages: the euro to dollar converter and the yen to dollar converter.

Pounds to Dollars Converter: FAQ

How is the pound to dollar rate worked out from ECB rates?
The ECB publishes how many dollars and how many pounds equal one euro. Dividing the dollar figure by the pound figure gives dollars per pound.
Is this the live GBP/USD market rate?
No. It is derived from the ECB's reference rates, which are set once per working day at around 16:00 Central European Time. The market rate moves all day; the date of the rate used is shown under the result.
Will I get this rate when I pay by card or change cash?
Usually not exactly. Banks, card networks and exchange offices apply their own rate, which includes a margin, and may add a fee. Cash exchange rates in particular can be noticeably worse than a reference rate.
Why is no rate shown?
The page has no built-in rate. If your browser could not reach the rate service, nothing is shown; press Refresh rate to try again.
