Where the price comes from

When the page loads, your browser requests the current price from the public API of CoinGecko at api.coingecko.com. The request names the coin and the three currencies, never the amount you typed.

Under the result you see when CoinGecko last updated the price and when your browser fetched it. Press Refresh rate for a newer price.

CoinGecko's price is an average across many exchanges. The price on the exchange or in the wallet you use will differ from it, and what you pay or receive also includes that service's spread and fees. Crypto prices can move by several percent within minutes, so treat the result as an indication, not a quote.

No price is built into this page. If the request fails, or CoinGecko limits the number of requests from your connection, the converter shows no result instead of an old or made-up number.

Bitcoin to USD example with a round price

With a round example price of 1 BTC = 80,000 USD (not the current price):

  • 0.25 BTC × 80,000 = 20,000.00 USD
  • 500 USD ÷ 80,000 = 0.00625 BTC

How do I convert dollars to Bitcoin?
Press Swap, or select USD in the From list. The dollar amount is divided by the price of one Bitcoin. The result is shown with up to eight decimals, the smallest unit a Bitcoin amount can have.
Why is the price different on my exchange?
CoinGecko reports an average across many exchanges. Each exchange has its own price, which depends on its own buyers and sellers, and adds a spread and fees when you trade.
How current is the price?
It is fetched when the page loads and whenever you press Refresh rate. CoinGecko's free public interface is refreshed about once a minute on their side. The page shows both the time of CoinGecko's last update and the time of your request.
Can I use the result for a tax return or a trade?
Use it as an indication only. For a trade, the price that counts is the one your exchange quotes at that moment. For records, use the statements of the service that carried out the transaction.
