Word Tools
Find, combine and swap words: for word games, puzzles, names and writing.
Two of these tools answer the same basic question, "which words can I make from these letters?", in different ways. The Scrabble word finder takes a rack of tiles, including blanks, and sorts the words by tile score. The word generator with letters lets you set the shortest and longest word and has an anagram mode that only returns words using every letter, which is what you want for unscrambling a jumbled word.
Both search a word list that is stored on this site, so the letters you type are not sent anywhere. The list is the headword list of Webster's Second International Dictionary of 1934, which is in the public domain and ships with FreeBSD as the web2 file.
That choice has a cost: it contains base forms only, so most plurals and verb forms are missing, and it is not the official word list of any game. The pages say so next to the results.
The synonym generator is the one tool here that needs an outside service: it sends the word you look up to the Datamuse API and shows what comes back. The page states this next to the search field.
The alliteration generator builds phrases whose words start with the same letter, and the word combination generator lists every combination of two to five words from a list, which is useful for brainstorming names. If you only need to put a list in order, the alphabetical order generator is under Text tools.
