Where the rate comes from

When the page loads, your browser requests the euro foreign exchange reference rates of the European Central Bank (ECB) from api.frankfurter.dev, a free service that republishes them. The request is the same for every visitor: it does not contain your amount or the currencies you picked. Under the result you see the date the rates apply to and the time your browser fetched them.

The ECB sets its reference rates once per working day, at around 16:00 Central European Time, and publishes them for information only. They are not live market rates, and they are not the rate you get when you exchange money: banks, card companies and exchange offices add their own margin or fee. The ECB quotes every currency against the euro, so a rate between two other currencies is calculated through the euro.

No rate is built into this page. If the request fails, the converter shows no result instead of an old or made-up number.

How the currency converter calculates a cross rate

result = amount × (target currency per euro ÷ source currency per euro)

The ECB publishes how many units of each currency equal one euro. Dividing two of those figures gives the rate between the two currencies.

How to convert between two currencies: a worked example

The figures below are round example numbers, not current rates. Suppose the reference rates are 1 EUR = 1.10 USD and 1 EUR = 0.85 GBP.

  1. Pounds to dollars: 1.10 ÷ 0.85 = 1.2941 USD per GBP.
  2. 200 GBP × 1.2941 = 258.82 USD.
  3. The other way round: 1 USD = 0.85 ÷ 1.10 = 0.7727 GBP, so 258.82 USD × 0.7727 = 200.00 GBP.
Currency converter example at round example rates of 1 EUR = 1.10 USD and 1 EUR = 0.85 GBP: 1 GBP = 1.10 ÷ 0.85 = 1.2941 USD, so 200.00 GBP converts to 258.82 USD.
The ECB quotes every currency against the euro, so a pair without the euro is worked out through it.

The table under the converter shows common amounts at the rate that was actually loaded.

For the most searched pairs there are pages with their own examples: euro to dollar, pounds to dollars, yen to dollar and pesos to dollars. Bitcoin and Ether have no ECB rate; the Bitcoin to USD converter uses a market price from CoinGecko instead.

Currency Converter: FAQ

Is this a live exchange rate?
No. It is the European Central Bank's reference rate, which is set once per working day at around 16:00 Central European Time. On weekends and holidays the latest published rate is shown. The date of the rate is printed under the result.
Why is my bank's rate different?
The reference rate is a mid-market figure published for information. Banks, card networks and exchange offices sell currency at their own rate, which includes a margin, and may charge a fee on top. Ask your provider for the rate and fees that apply to your transaction.
Which currencies can I convert?
The euro and the 29 currencies for which the ECB publishes a euro reference rate, including the US dollar, pound sterling, yen, Swiss franc, Canadian and Australian dollar, yuan, rupee, Mexican peso and Brazilian real. Currencies without an ECB rate are not offered.
How is a rate between two non-euro currencies calculated?
Through the euro. To convert pounds to dollars, the amount is divided by the pound rate per euro and multiplied by the dollar rate per euro.
What happens if the rate cannot be loaded?
The converter shows no result. There is no stored or built-in rate to fall back on.
