Word Generator With Letters

Type some letters and get the words that can be made from them. Each letter is used at most as often as you typed it.

Runs in your browser. The word list is a file on this site; your letters are not sent anywhere. Sources: Webster's Second (1934) Updated

Up to 15 letters, A to Z.

Enter your letters and press Make words. The word list (about 210 kB compressed) is loaded on the first search.

How the word generator finds words from letters

    1. Your input is reduced to the letters A to Z. Each letter is counted: catbed is one each of A, B, C, D, E and T.
    2. Every word in the list with a length between your shortest and longest setting is checked letter by letter against those counts.
    3. A word is kept if none of its letters is needed more often than you have it. With Use every letter, the word must also be as long as your input.
    4. The matches are sorted, longest first, and the first 300 are shown.

Words from the letters catbed: an example

From the letters catbed, with a word length of 3 to 8:

    • BEAD needs B, E, A, D. All four are there: it is kept.
    • ADDED needs three Ds and there is one: it is dropped.
    • DECADE needs two Ds and two Es: it is dropped.

Of this small sample of words, act, bad, bat, bed, bet, cab, cat, tab, abed, bade, bead, beat, beta, cade, cate, dace, date, debt, abet, bate, added, decade, the letters can make 20: abed, abet, act, bad, bade, bat, bate, bead, beat, bed, bet, beta, cab, cade, cat, cate, dace, date, debt, tab.

Bar chart of the 44 words the word generator finds in the letters CATBED at the default length of 3 to 8: 24 of 3 letters such as ACE and ACT, 17 of 4 letters such as ABED and ABET, and 3 of 5 letters: BATED, CADET and ECTAD.
No 6-letter word in the list uses all of C, A, T, B, E and D, so anagram mode finds nothing for these letters.

Which word list the word generator uses

The list holds 76,210 words of two to eight letters from Webster's New International Dictionary, Second Edition, published in 1934. It is taken from the web2 file shipped with FreeBSD, is in the public domain and is stored on this site. The tool therefore does not have to send your letters to another service.

The price is that it is old and holds base forms only. For game play, check a word in the dictionary your game uses. The Scrabble word finder uses the same list and adds tile scores.

To turn the words you found into name ideas, paste a few into the word combination generator. To sort them A to Z, use the alphabetical order generator.

    Word Generator With Letters: FAQ

How do I unscramble a word?
Type the scrambled letters and tick Use every letter. The result is every word in the list that is an exact anagram of your letters. For tca it finds ACT and CAT.
Can a letter be used twice?
Only if you typed it twice. From catbed the tool can make BED and CAB, but not ADDED, which needs three Ds.
    Which words does it know?
About 76,000 English words of two to eight letters, taken from the headword list of Webster's Second International Dictionary (1934), which is in the public domain. It contains base forms: most regular plurals and verb forms such as CATS or WALKED are missing, and so are words coined after 1934.
    Can I use a wildcard?
Yes. A question mark stands for any one letter: c?t finds CAT, COT and CUT among others.
Why are some of the words so unusual?
The source is an unabridged dictionary, so it includes rare, technical and obsolete words. Look a word up before you rely on it in a game or a puzzle.
