How the Unicode text converter maps letters

Unicode contains complete styled alphabets for use in mathematics, in the block Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols. Each style is a run of 26 capitals followed by 26 small letters, so converting a letter is a fixed offset:

bold "A" = U+1D400  โ†’  bold letter = U+1D400 + (position in the alphabet โˆ’ 1)

Where a styled letter already existed elsewhere, the block has a gap and the older character is used instead. Italic small h is U+210E, the Planck constant sign.

Fullwidth characters sit exactly 65,248 positions (hexadecimal FEE0) after their ASCII originals. Strikethrough and underline keep your letters and add a combining stroke (U+0336) or combining low line (U+0332) after each one.

How to write Hello in Unicode bold: a worked example

The word Hello in bold:

  1. H is the 8th capital. Bold capitals start at U+1D400, so bold H is U+1D400 + 7 = U+1D407: ๐‡
  2. e is the 5th small letter. Bold small letters start at U+1D41A, so bold e is U+1D41A + 4 = U+1D41E: ๐ž
  3. The same step for l, l and o gives ๐‡๐ž๐ฅ๐ฅ๐จ. In UTF-8 each of these characters takes 4 bytes, so the five letters occupy 20 bytes instead of 5.

The same word in script is โ„‹โ„ฏ๐“๐“โ„ด: the H, the e and the o come from the older Letterlike Symbols block (U+210B, U+212F and U+2134), which is why they can look slightly different from the two l's.

"Hello" in Unicode bold: the code points U+0048 U+0065 U+006C U+006C U+006F become U+1D407 U+1D41E U+1D425 U+1D425 U+1D428, and the size grows from 5 to 20 bytes in UTF-8.
Bold letters are separate characters from the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block, not a font setting.

The extra bytes matter where a limit is counted in bytes; the letter counter shows both the characters and the UTF-8 bytes of a text, and text to hex lists every byte. To change capitals without changing the characters, use Convert Case. For large letters drawn from many characters, try the ASCII art generator.

Unicode Text Converter: FAQ

Is this a font?
No. A font changes how the same character is drawn. This tool swaps each letter for a different Unicode character that looks like a bold, italic or script version of it. That is why the result keeps its look in places where you cannot choose a font, such as a profile name or a plain-text message.
Does Unicode bold text work on Instagram, LinkedIn and Facebook?
It pastes there like any other text, because the styled letters are Unicode characters and not formatting. That is how people get bold or italic letters into an Instagram bio, a LinkedIn post or a Facebook comment. The usual limits still apply: some readers' devices show boxes instead, and search and screen readers may not read the styled words as words.
Why do some letters look different from the rest of the style?
A few styled letters were added to Unicode long before the full alphabets, in a different block. Script capital B, E, F, H, I, L, M and R are examples. A device may draw those with another font than their neighbors, which makes them stand out.
Why do I see empty boxes instead of letters?
The device has no font that contains those characters. The bold, italic and sans-serif styles are supported most widely. Small caps, circled and upside-down text use characters from many different blocks and are more likely to have gaps.
Do the styles work for digits and accented letters?
Digits change only in bold, double-struck, sans-serif, sans bold, monospace, fullwidth and circled. Unicode has no italic or script digits. Accented letters, and letters outside A to Z, are left as they are in every style.
Can people search for text written this way?
Usually not. The styled characters are different characters, so a search for hello does not match ๐ก๐ž๐ฅ๐ฅ๐จ. Screen readers can also read each one as a symbol name or skip it. Use styled text for decoration, not for anything people need to find or hear.
How do I turn styled text back into normal letters?
Paste it into the left pane and choose Back to plain. It applies Unicode compatibility normalization (NFKC), which maps the styled letters back to A to Z. Small caps and upside-down text cannot be reversed this way.
