How the letter counter counts characters and words
| Count | Rule |
|---|---|
| Characters | Every Unicode code point: letters, digits, punctuation, spaces and line breaks. |
| Characters without spaces | Characters minus spaces, tabs and line breaks. |
| Letters | Characters that are letters in any alphabet. Digits and punctuation are not letters. |
| Digits | The characters 0 to 9, and the digits of other scripts. |
| Words | Runs of characters separated by white space. |
| Sentences | Pieces of text that end in . ! or ? followed by a space, or that end a paragraph. |
| Paragraphs | Blocks of text separated by at least one blank line. |
| Lines | Line breaks plus one. Blank lines count. |
| Bytes (UTF-8) | The size of the text when saved as UTF-8: 1 byte for a basic Latin character, 2 to 4 for others. |
The letter frequency list ignores case, so T and t are counted together, and shows each letter's share of all letters.
Letter count example: a 40-character sentence
For the text The quick brown fox jumps. It runs fast! the counter reports:
- 40 characters, of which 7 are spaces, so 33 without spaces.
- 31 letters: the 33 non-space characters minus the full stop and the exclamation mark.
- 8 words and 2 sentences, one ending in a full stop and one in an exclamation mark.
- The most frequent letters are
s(3),t(3),u(3).
Character limits: spaces, words and bytes
Forms, ad platforms and social networks set their limits in characters, and most include spaces. Schools and publishers usually set limits in words.
If a limit matters, check which one is meant and how the other side counts: some systems count bytes, and some count certain characters twice. The byte count above is the one to use for database fields and SMS-style limits that are defined in bytes.
Styled letters from the Unicode text converter are one reason byte counts can surprise: each bold or italic letter is 4 bytes, against 1 for a plain letter. To estimate how long a text takes to read aloud, use the words to minutes calculator with the word count from this page.
To fix the capitals before you count, run the text through Convert Case. To count list items instead of words, the alphabetical order generator reports how many lines a list has and how many duplicates it removed.
